WHO? The Fly Over States is mostly Greg Younger and James Pearson. We're songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, producers and general all-around studio rats with a love for all things POP. We are a bit like xtc, Crowded House, Elvis Costello and Ben Folds Five. Greg is a former Warner Brothers engineer from Tulsa, OK and I'm a painter from Louisville now living in western KY.
GETTING STARTED: Greg and I met a few years back and discovered our common appreciation for British pop and well-crafted songwriting. Here's a list of common influences: the beatles, xtc, the pretenders, squeeze, elvis costello and the attractions etc. In addition, Greg likes all kinds of singer/songwriter stuff from tom waits to freedy johnston, piano jazz, americana and bluegrass. My longstanding influences are todd rundgren, brian wilson, xtc, the beatles and nrbq. Of course there's also: neil finn, michael penn, all the jellyfish guys especially jason falkner and jon brion, bill lloyd, david poe, aimee mann, ross rice, brad jones and more including film scores by bernard herrmann, ambient stuff from ryuichi sakamoto, cartoon music, thelonius monk, sun-ra, the replacements, bob mould, blinker the star, the flaming lips, komeda, built to spill, the posies, antonio carlos jobim, anything mitchell froom or tchad blake produces, the la's and so on. some of my guitar faves are dave gregory, james honeyman scott, george harrison, andy summers, alain johannes, allan holdsworth and adrian belew.
HOW WE WORK: Greg and I write and record tons of demo stuff at our homes. We pick our way through the demo material to decide what will be part of the fly over states. We then coproduce/rearrange/record together at his place, mine or wherever we can. Over the years, we've written more than 50 songs, finished tracking enough material for 2 cd's, have mixed 16 tracks (at Sony/Tree and Warner Brothers' former "Loft" studio-now called the Treehouse.)
SUPPORT: Tim Roberts contributed wonderful guitar work, a few loops, invaluable engineering/mixing/mastering and technical support. Tim's worked with a lot of people over the years but now concentrates most of his time on bluegrass and americana. Shawn Shepherd contributed additional engineering/mixing assistance and positive atmosphere! Shawn's an absolutely classy guy who paints and acts in addition to booking independent films for the Belcourt Theater/arthouse in Nashville's Hillsboro village. Donnie Bott also did some additional mastering and provided general support. Donnie's a longtime friend who just happens to be a fantastic engineer. db's been at several premiere facilities and worked us in between jobs before moving to Louisville to manage a friend's studio. Lucky us!
WHAT NOW? We're looking at complete electronic distribution via downloads around the net.
IUMA will continue to be our primary address with exclusive downloads not included anywhere else!
LIVE? We ran thru some of this stuff in rehearsals with some friends from the band "Simon Starbuck" in Tulsa, OK . Real tight arrangements with lots of crunchy guitars, vocal harmonies, piano and an assortment of unrecognizable noises....who knows, maybe we'll line up some gigs in Tulsa and Nashville?
In the meantime, we hope you'll download the studio clips for yourselves and check out the jpegs. Like what you hear? Send me an email! We've got cd's available for sale.
